Optical Data Link Across the Skin

When more sound information is provided by a sound processor, it must be sent to the implanted portion of the system at very high data rates. Available systems use radio-frequency coils to signal information across the skin and to power the internal device. ACS has developed a two-way optical link, passing data through the skin on light beams at very high rates. This optical link technology is independent of power transfer for the internal system. It is capable of data rates of 10 Mbits/second and higher, making it fully capable for high-precision systems. The skin area needed for the optical link is significantly smaller than required for the RF-coil technology, providing a cosmetically attractive alternative
